What exactly do we mean by unusual activity?
Graffiti and Street Art are in fact unusual activities to do in Berlin or anywhere else.
Indeed, graffiti is an urban art that, although present everywhere in our cities, on our walls, our roofs, our trains, our subways, by giant or smaller frescoes, simple tags made in a few seconds, or any other project made by a lot of artists with different origins and visions, is in its very essence, not very well known by the general public, and remains a mystery for most people, even those who are interested in it, without actively participating in it as we have been for the past two decades.
Graffiti is an urban art, born in New York in the 70’s in a totally illegal way, mainly on the subways of the city, before having conquered step by step, through the evolution of the law and the security repressing and trying to prevent these first graffiti artists from painting, also the walls, the roofs and all other supports that these first graffiti artists chose to express themselves.
It has remained, more than 50 years later, an illegal urban art and an unusual activity, in Berlin, New York, Paris, as well as elsewhere, simply because the inherent illegality of this urban art practice makes it an activity practiced by a very small number of passionate artists, who, despite the fact that one of the goals of their practice is to be seen in as many places as possible and recognized by as many people as possible, remain anonymous and only very occasionally share their way of creating art with people outside of this very secret and extremely closed environment.
